I accidentally emptied my Recycle Bin and realized some important files were in it. I don’t have a Windows restore point or backup available. What are the best ways to recover deleted files from the Recycle Bin safely before they get overwritten?
Emptying the Recycle Bin does not always mean the file is physically gone right away. A lot of the time, Windows just removes the file’s listing and marks that space on the drive as reusable. The actual data can still sit there until something else gets written over it. That is why recovery tools sometimes manage to bring back deleted files, at least partly.
Before jumping into recovery software, check the easy stuff first.
Open the Recycle Bin again and look carefully. Search by the file name, but also check the folder it originally came from if you remember it. Sometimes the file was deleted from a different location than expected, renamed, or just missed the first time. If it is still there, right-click it and choose Restore. Windows should put it back where it was before.
If the file is definitely not in the Recycle Bin, stop using that drive as much as you can. This matters more than people realize. Do not install programs on it, download anything to it, save new documents, copy photos over, run updates, or move extra files onto it. Any new data written to the drive can land in the same space where the deleted file used to be. Once that happens, recovery gets much harder or may not work at all.
After that, check whether Windows already has a backup copy. Go to the folder where the file used to be, right-click inside the folder or right-click the folder itself, and choose Restore previous versions. If Windows has File History, restore points, or another backup available, you may see older versions of that folder. Pick one from before the deletion. It is usually better to open it or copy out the file you need instead of replacing the whole current folder right away.

Look through the available dates and see if the missing file or folder is there. If File History was not turned on before the file was deleted, then this method probably will not show anything useful.
If there is no backup, then a recovery tool like Disk Drill can scan the drive for deleted data. Install the recovery program on a different drive, not the one the file was deleted from. Installing it on the same drive can overwrite the deleted data before you even get a chance to scan for it.
Once the program is open, choose the affected disk and start Search for lost data. Let the normal scan finish, and if the program offers a deeper scan, let that finish too. Deep scans can take a while, but they may find files that no longer show up through the usual file-system records.
When the scan results appear, check the found files and use preview if the tool provides it. Preview can give you a decent idea of whether the file is still readable. Just keep in mind that being able to preview something does not always mean the recovered file will be perfect or fully usable.
When you recover the files, save them to another physical drive. Do not put recovered files back onto the same disk you are scanning. Writing them there can overwrite other deleted files that the scan has not recovered yet.
Also check the current terms for whatever recovery tool you use. Some Windows recovery apps offer a limited amount of free recovery, but limits, licensing, and feature restrictions can change.
One more thing: SSD recovery is often less reliable than recovery from old-style hard drives because of TRIM. When TRIM is active, the SSD can be told that deleted blocks are no longer needed, and the controller may clear them internally. After that, normal recovery software usually cannot get the data back.
So the best move is to act quickly: stop writing to the drive, check the Recycle Bin, look for backups, and only then scan the disk with recovery software installed somewhere else.
Do not keep using the PC normally if the missing files were on the Windows drive. Even just browsing, restarting, or letting updates run can create temp files that land where your deleted files used to be.
@mikeappsreviewer is right about not installing recovery software onto the same disk, but I’d be even more cautious if the files are important. If you can, shut the machine down and connect that drive to another computer as a secondary drive. Then scan it from there. A better setup is to make a full image of the drive first and run recovery against the image, because repeated scans are still extra wear and risk, especially on a failing drive.
Before paying for anything, check places that are easy to forget: OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, email attachments, USB drives, phone sync folders, and the web recycle bin for any cloud service you use. Those trash/version-history areas are separate from the Windows Recycle Bin, so “no restore point” does not always mean “no copy anywhere.”
If you do use Disk Drill or another recovery tool, treat preview as the filter. If the file previews correctly, your odds are better. If it finds only weird fragments, renamed files, or zero-byte results, don’t assume the paid recovery step will magically fix them. And save recovered files to a different physical drive, not just a different folder on the same disk.
A deleted photo on a secondary old-style hard drive is a very different problem from a deleted document on your main Windows SSD that you kept using for a few hours. The first one may be fairly recoverable. The second one might already be gone, even if a recovery program shows the file name.
The biggest trap people miss is running “fix” tools before recovery. Do not run CHKDSK, “scan and repair,” defrag, storage cleanup, registry cleaners, manufacturer SSD tools, or any “optimize drive” option on that disk right now. Those are useful in other situations, but after deletion they can make recovery worse by changing file system records or causing more writes.
I agree with the advice above about not installing recovery software to the same drive. I would go a step more boring and say: decide how important the files are before you touch anything else. If these are irreplaceable tax documents, client files, family photos, legal stuff, etc., don’t experiment with five different recovery apps. Power the machine off and consider a proper recovery shop. Every DIY scan is usually less risky than normal use, but it is still activity on a drive that may be your only copy.
If the files are important but not “pay a lab” important, I’d do this:
- Stop using that computer if the deleted files were on C:.
- Use another computer to download the recovery tool.
- Put the recovery tool on a USB stick or another drive.
- Recover to a different physical disk, not back to C:.
- If possible, make an image of the drive first and scan the image instead of the original.
For a cheaper first try, Microsoft’s Windows File Recovery is worth considering if you are comfortable with a command line. It is not as friendly as something like Disk Drill, and the results can be messy, but it can recover some deleted files without paying for a commercial app. The annoying part is that you need somewhere else to save the recovered files, and you need to type the command correctly. Do not point the output back to the same drive you are recovering from.
With commercial tools, I would not treat the “found files” count as proof of anything. Recovery programs often show thousands of items that are browser cache, partial files, thumbnails, old temp files, or files with no useful names left. Preview matters more than the big number on the screen. If your Word document, JPG, ZIP, or PDF previews properly, that is a much better sign. If it only shows a generic file name, broken preview, or a tiny file size, paying may not change the result.
Disk Drill is fine to try if you want a more user-friendly scan, but don’t buy anything until you know what it can actually preview. Same goes for any other recovery app. If you want to compare options instead of grabbing the first ad you see, this data recovery software list is a better starting point than random search results.
Another small detail: if the file was deleted from an external USB drive, SD card, or old HDD, your odds are usually better than if it was deleted from an internal SSD. On SSDs, TRIM can make deleted data unrecoverable pretty quickly. That does not mean “don’t try,” but it does mean you should keep expectations realistic. Sometimes the safest recovery method still finds nothing usable because the drive already discarded the data.
And don’t forget the boring places before scanning for hours: recent files in the app itself, email attachments, browser downloads, OneDrive/Dropbox/Google Drive trash, phone photo backup, another laptop, old USB sticks, and exported copies. Those are not “recovery” in the technical sense, but they often beat trying to rebuild a deleted file from fragments.
So the safe order is: stop writing to the disk, check cloud/app copies, avoid repair/cleanup tools, scan from another drive or another machine, preview before paying, and save anything recovered somewhere else. The “no restore point” part only removes one possible recovery route. It does not automatically mean the files are impossible to get back.
