I’m trying to understand how iPhone figures out the storage used by apps because the numbers in iPhone Storage don’t seem to match what I expect. Some apps look much larger than their download size, and I’m not sure if that includes cached data, documents, or system files. I need help understanding what counts toward app storage and why it changes over time.
I ran into the same mess on my iPhone, and the numbers in Storage made no sense at first. You look at Settings, you add things up, and some chunk still feels off.
When you open Settings > General > iPhone Storage, iOS is checking things on the spot. It counts the app itself, meaning the installed code, the app resources, language files, bundled assets, and the little support pieces it needs to launch and run. Apple usually rolls all of that into the Applications total.
The split between Applications and App Data gets confusing fast. The app size is the installed package. App Data, which Apple often labels Documents & Data, is your stuff inside the app. Think downloaded playlists, message history, saved files, drafts, offline videos, edited project files, and other leftovers the app keeps around after you use it.
Where it gets ugly is storage creep. I saw this most with social apps, streaming apps, and games. They keep caches so photos, thumbnails, video chunks, and other media load faster the next time. On paper, iOS should clear some of it when space gets tight. In my case, it didn’t do a great job. A few apps kept swelling for no clear reason.
My phone got slow when free space dropped low. Camera launch lagged. App switching felt sticky. Even typing had a delay once in a while. iPhones need breathing room for temp files and routine system tasks, so when you get close to full storage, performance tends to fall off.
I started with the usual cleanup. I offloaded apps I hadn’t touched in months. I cleared Safari website data. I removed a few old downloads. It helped some, not enough. The bigger problem was my photo library. I had duplicate shots, giant screenshots, and random screen recordings I forgot about.

What you see in iPhone Storage is installed size, not the App Store download size. Those are different numbers.
Download size is compressed. Apple strips parts you do not need for your device at install time, then expands the app on disk. So a 250 MB download might sit closer to 600 MB or more after install. Games are the easy exmaple. They pull in textures, audio packs, and local assets.
iPhone also counts more than the main app binary. It includes:
the app bundle,
frameworks and plug-ins,
on-device resources,
app group storage shared with widgets or extensions,
some caches and temporary files.
This is where I differ a bit from @mikeappsreviewer. iOS does not always show a clean line between ‘app’ and ‘data’. The totals are estimates, and indexing lags. If you delete a bunch of files, the number in Settings might stay wrong for a while until iOS recalculates.
A few things make apps look bloated:
Streaming apps store offline media.
Social apps keep image and video caches.
Messaging apps keep attachments and previews.
Browsers keep site data.
Some apps leave behind temp files longer than they should.
If you want to verify it, check the app’s line item in Settings, then compare it after:
- restarting the phone
- offloading the app
- reinstalling it
If size drops hard after reinstall, the extra space was cache or orphaned data.
Also check System Data. People blame Applications when the missing space is sitting there instead.

It’s more like a snapshot built from file system categories, app containers, shared containers, and purgeable space estimates. So sometimes the number is “right enough,” not perfectly exact. Kinda annoying, but that’s how Apple does it.
Why apps look bigger than expected:
- App Store size is compressed
- Installed app is uncompressed
- extra assets may download after install
- widgets, extensions, stickers, watch components, and app groups can count toward that app
- caches may sit with the app total or its data depending on how iOS classifies them
- storage graphs can lag after deletions
I actually disagree a little with the idea that every bloated app is the app’s fault. Sometimes iOS just reports stuff weirdly for a while, esp after updates. Rebooting and waiting can change the totals without you doing anything.
If you want the cleanest test, compare an app before and after deleting/reinstalling it. That usually exposes cache bloat fast. Also check Files app, Messages attachments, and System Data, because people miss those constantly.

Short version: iPhone calculates app storage from the installed app plus related on-device stuff, and the math is often a little messy, not broken.
One extra wrinkle missing from @andarilhonoturno, @voyageurdubois, and @mikeappsreviewer: APFS can make storage look weird because of snapshots, cloning, and shared blocks. So two apps or app updates may not consume space in a simple add-it-up way. iPhone Storage is partly category math, not a raw folder-size report.
Also, I would not assume every large app number is “real” user-facing junk. Some of it is app thinning leftovers, asset packs, or extension containers that only make sense to iOS.
What usually counts under an app’s footprint:
- executable plus bundled assets
- extensions like widgets, keyboards, iMessage packs
- shared containers used by the app and its add-ons
- databases
- caches that iOS has not purged yet
- downloaded model files, maps, voices, game resources
What often confuses people is that deleting content inside an app does not always shrink the Settings number right away because the app may keep sparse files, SQLite vacuum lag, or reclaimable cache.
If your goal is finding what is actually wasting space, I’d look less at the headline total and more at which apps never shrink over days. That usually separates true storage use from reporting lag.
