I have a lot of duplicate and almost identical pictures on my iPhone, and it’s getting hard to clean up my library. I’m trying to figure out whether the Photos app can detect similar photos automatically or if it only finds exact duplicates. I started with Apple Photos because I figured the built-in route would be enough. It wasn’t. You get decent sorting tools, sure, but it didn’t help me round up near-duplicates in any useful way. I had sets of the same subject, same angle, same moment, and they were still sitting all over the library. I ended up doing too much by hand, and it got old fast.

If you want to avoid third-party apps, you still have a few workable options inside Apple Photos. It’s slower, but it helps.
- Use Search to look up a person, pet, place, object, or event.
- Check photos from the same day or trip, since duplicates and near-duplicates usually pile up there.
- Open Burst shots and keep the frame you want.
- Look through albums like People & Pets, Trips, and Media Types to make the manual pass less painful.
My take, Apple Photos is fine for browsing. For duplicate-style cleanup, I found it weak. The app above did the sorting job I thought Apple’s app would do in the first place.

Photos on iPhone finds exact duplicates. It does not do a great job with near-duplicates, like five shots of the same pose with tiny differences. So yes, Apple Photos helps, but only part way.
Check Utilities > Duplicates. If iOS found exact matches, you’ll see a Merge option. It keeps one copy and combines metadata. Nice feature, but it misses most “almost the same” pics. That’s the gap.
I slightly disagree with @mikeappsreviewer on one point. Apple Photos is not useless here. If your mess includes imports, saved images, or repeated downloads, the built-in Duplicates tool cleans those up fast. For similars, though, you need more.
Best route if you want less manual work is Clever Cleaner. It sorts similar photos into groups, which is the part Apple still doen’t handle well. Review before deleting, esp if you shoot bursts or kid/pet photos where tiny changes matter.
